A low-slung home overlooking the Escalante National Monument

Black Mesa

SITE
Boulder, Utah
6,750 ft.

Site-gathered boulders and hand-fashioned timber ground this home into its sweeping desert terrain.

A new home built in the National Park Service (NPS) Rustic style known as “Parkitecture.” The style is infused with native materials and designed to blend into the landscape rather than impose upon it.

Architectural Design and Timber Frame Construction

“The site is a wide-open expanse of Navajo slickrock studded with huge black boulders, and it called for a home that respected the materials of the place. The cruciform plan countered the site with shade, shelter, and community with others, flowing seamlessly from outdoor to indoor rooms: cool in summer, sunny in winter, protected from the wind and open to the breezes.” — Sophia Rickard, Project Lead
